A Look at Fixed Ratio Schedule in Psychology

A Look at Fixed Ratio Schedule in Psychology More in Theories Behavioral Psychology Cognitive Psychology Developmental Psychology Personality Psychology Social Psychology Biological Psychology Psychosocial Psychology In operant conditioning, a fixed-ratio schedule is a schedule of reinforcement where a response is reinforced only after a specified number of responses. Essentially, the subject provides a set number of responses and then the trainer offers a reward. One advantage of this type of schedule is that it produces a high, steady rate of responding with only a brief pause after the delivery of the reinforcer. If you recall, operant conditioning involves strengthening or weakening behaviors via rewards and punishments. This type of associative learning involves changing behavior based upon that behaviors consequences. In other words, if a behavior is followed by a desirable consequence, then that behavior is more likely to occur again in the future. If, on the other hand, an action is followed by an undesirable consequence, then the action becomes less likely to take place again in the future. Behaviorist B.F. Skinner observed that the rate at which a behavior was reinforced, or the schedule of reinforcement, had an impact on the frequency and strength of the response. The fixed-ratio schedule is just one of the schedules that Skinner identified. How the Fixed-Ratio Schedule Works The fixed-ratio schedule can be understood by looking at the term itself. Fixed refers to the delivery of rewards on a consistent schedule. Ratio refers to the number of responses that are required in order to receive reinforcement. For example, a fixed-ratio schedule might be delivery a reward for every fifth response. After the subject responds to the stimulus five times, a reward is delivered. So imagine that you are training a lab rat to press a button in order to receive a food pellet. You decide to put the rat on a fixed-ratio 15 (FR-15) schedule. In order to receive the food pellet, the rat must engage in the operant response (pressing the button) 15 times before it will receive the food pellet. The schedule is fixed, so the rat will consistently receive the pellet every 15 times it presses the lever. Characteristics So what impact does the fixed-ratio schedule have on response rates? Results in high, steady responding until the reinforcement is deliveredBest used when learning a new behaviorLeads to a brief response pause after reinforcement, but responding quickly resumes Typically, the FR schedule leads to very high rates of response that follow a burst-pause-burst pattern. Subjects will respond at a high rate until the reinforcement is delivered, at which point there will be a brief pause. However, responding will resume once again at a high rate. One of the advantages of a fixed-ratio schedule is that it leads to a fairly high rate of responding, albeit there is usually a short pause after a reward is delivered. One possible disadvantage is that subjects may quickly become exhausted from such a high response rate or they may become satiated after a number of reinforcements have been given. Examples of Fixed-Ratio Schedules Production Line Work: Workers at a widget factory are paid for every 15 widgets they make. This results in a high production rate and workers tend to take few breaks. It can, however, lead to burnout and lower-quality work.Collecting Tokens in a Video Game: In many video games, you have to collect so many tokens, object, or points in order to receive some type of reward.Sales Commissions: A worker earns a commission for every third sale that they make.Grades: A child is offered a reward after they earn five A’s on her homework assignments. After her fifth A on a homework assignment, she gets to pick out a new toy.Piecework: Jobs that require X amount of responses in order to receive compensation. For example, a worker receives X amount of dollars for every 100 envelopes they stuff or every 100 fliers they stick on windshields.Farm work: Farm workers are paid X amount of dollars for every basket of fruit that they pick. A Word From Verywell A fixed-ratio schedule can be a useful approach to certain situations that utilize operant conditioning. When choosing a schedule, however, it is important to think about factors such as how frequently you want the subject to respond and how often you want to provide a reward.

Why Personal Development Helps Business Development

Goal: to post about why personal development helps business development Total Word Count In This Document: 1524 Title: ?Why Personal Development Helps Business Development? When entrepreneurs and business leaders think about how they can better improve their businesses or develop their small, start-up companies into successful corporate giants, personal development is one strategy that often doesn?t come to mind. However, personal development is actually the most important thing entrepreneurs and business leaders can do for their business development skills and strategy. One?s personal development is highly critical to the success of their business development, and here s why. Previously, people went to work everyday just to work.†¦show more content†¦Whether big or small, regardless of their type of field, industry, or desired market, businesses everywhere are now beginning to realize that by empowering their staff, and instilling drive, passion, motivation, and other essential personal values into them, oftentimes by being a shining example of those values yourself as their business leader, you can guide your staff towards bringing about better results for your business, making more progress for your business, and altogether developing your business into a more successful model. Now more than ever, personal development is key to helping business development in today?s highly competitive and digitalized corporate landscape. Previously, around fifty or so years ago, the corporate landscape was much less competitive?and much less empowering. When an entrepreneur or a business leader wanted to see an increase in results for their company, they simply hired more workers to a single shift to add more units and up productivity, which would then hopefully get the number of results the entrepreneur or business leader was looking for. When a worker was slowing down the whole team?s productivity or progress, or not doing enough to meet the company?s goals set by the entrepreneur and business leader, then all the entrepreneur or business leader would do typically would be to bring them into their office and tell them to do a better job and work harder or find another way of paying the bills

Embryonic Research - 1080 Words

Many women are eager to become a mother, but infertility prevents some women from satisfying this need. However, modern biotechnologies combined with changed norms of culture now provide them reproductive choices such as in vitro fertilization. In order to develop these reproductive choices, we need to research on living human embryo. Because its procedures terminate the life of embryo, embryonic research stirs up public attention on its morality. Society questions if these methods are morally right. Do they violate the meaning of personhood and life? Do we kill a human when we research the embryos? These questions are asking our foundation of morality. We must be cautious and avoid any logical fallacies when we answer them. Using†¦show more content†¦In this essay, Gorovitz points out several logical fallacies in embryonic research opponent essays, including Kass’. For instance, one of his arguments is that opposing essays usually use slippery slope arguments, stati ng that starting of artificial insemination would lead us to social disaster (117). He argues that the slippery slope arguments are not valid in this discussion because they never provide any rational evidences why we cannot stop after we start down this path. Gorovitz claims that â€Å"Collectively we have significant capacity to exercise judgment and control† (118) so the practice of artificial insemination will not lead us to the disaster. There are few more ill logics in Kass’ and other opposing essays that Gorovitz has pointed out. Ironically, however, logical fallacies he uses to attack his opponents also appear in his essay too. Another Gorovitz’s important argument is the argument against Kass’ statement, â€Å"The human embryo is not mere meat; it is not just stuff; it is not a ‘thing’† (Kass 102). Gorovitz argues that according to Kass’ statement, human cadavers which are also not mere meat, not just stuff, not the thing, should be protected from being used for research purpose too. But since it is acceptable to use human cadavers in research, in medical education, and in organs transplant, Gorovitz claims that these using of cadavers justify using of embryos as well. string(38) " the frightened feeling slipped away\." When Cassie got to the place where the boy had turned, she walked up the dunes between the pitiful little clumps of scraggly beach grass. At the top she looked around, but there was nothing to be seen but pitch pines and scrub oak trees. No boy. We will write a custom essay sample on The Secret Circle: The Initiation Chapter Two or any similar topic only for you Order Now No dog. Silence. She was hot. All right; fine. She turned back toward the sea, ignoring the twinge of disappointment, the strange emptiness she felt suddenly. She’d go get wet and cool off. Portia’s problem was Portia’s business. As for the red-haired guy – well, she’d probably never see him again, and he wasn’t her business either. A little inside shiver went through her; not the kind that shows, but the kind that makes you wonder if you’re sick. I must be too hot, she decided; hot enough that it starts to feel cold. I need a dip in the water. The water was cool, because this was the open-Atlantic side of the Cape. She waded in up to her knees and then continued walking down the beach. When she reached a dock, she splashed out of the water and climbed up to it. Only three boats were tied there: two rowboats and a powerboat. It was deserted. It was just what Cassie needed. She unhooked the thick, frayed rope meant to keep people like her off the dock and walked onto it. She walked far out, the weather-beaten wood creaking beneath her feet, the water stretching out on either side of her. When she looked back at the beach, she saw she’d left the other sunbathers far behind. A little breeze blew in her face, stirring her hair and making her wet legs tingle. Suddenly she felt – she couldn’t explain it. Like a balloon being caught by the wind and lifted. She felt light, she felt expanded. She felt free. She wanted to hold her arms out to the breeze and the ocean, but she didn’t quite dare. She wasn’t as free as all that. But she smiled as she got to the end of the dock. The sky and the ocean were exactly the same deep jewel-blue, except that the sky lightened down at the horizon where they met. Cassie thought that she could see the curve of the earth, but it might have been her imagination. Terns and herring gulls wheeled above. I should write a poem, she thought. She had a notebook full of scribbled poems at home under her bed. She hardly ever showed them to anyone, but she looked at them at night. Right now, though, she couldn’t think of any words. Still, it was lovely just to be here, smelling the salt sea-smell and feeling the warm planks beneath her and hearing the soft plashing of the water against the wooden piers. It was a hypnotic sound, rhythmic as a giant heartbeat or the breathing of the planet, and strangely familiar. She sat and gazed and listened, and as she did she felt her own breathing slow. For the first time since she’d come to New England, she felt she belonged. She was a part of the vastness of sky and earth and sea; a tiny part in all the immensity, but a part just the same. And slowly it came to her that her part might not be so small. She had been immersed in the rhythm of the earth, but now it seemed to her almost as if she controlled that rhythm. As if the elements were one with her, and under her command. She could feel the pulse of life in the planet, in herself, strong and deep and vibrant. The beat slowly rising in tension and expectancy, as if waiting for†¦ something. For what? Staring out to sea, she felt words come to her. Just a little jingle, like something you’d teach a child, but a poem nonetheless. Sky and sea, keep harm from me. The strange thing was that it didn’t feel like something she’d made up. It felt more like something she’d read – or heard – a long time ago. She had a brief flash of an image: being held in someone’s arms, and looking at the ocean. Being held up high and hearing words. Sky and sea, keep harm from me. Earth and fire, bring†¦ No. Cassie’s entire skin was tingling. She could sense, in a way she never had before, the arch of the sky and the granite solidity of the earth and the immeasurable span of the ocean, wave after wave after wave, to the horizon and beyond. And it was as if they were all waiting, watching, listening to her. Don’t finish it, she thought. Don’t say any more. A sudden irrational conviction had taken hold of her. As long as she didn’t find the last words of the poem, she was safe. Everything would be as it always had been; she would go home and live out her quiet, ordinary life in peace. As long as she could keep from saying the words, she’d be all right. But the poem was running through her mind, like the tinkling of icy music far away, and the last words fell into place. She couldn’t stop them. Sky and sea, keep harm from me. Earth and fire, bring†¦ my desire. Yes. Oh, what have I done ? It was like a string snapping. Cassie found herself on her feet, staring wildly out at the ocean. Something had happened; she had felt it, and now she could feel the elements receding from her, their connection broken. She no longer felt light and free, but jangled and out of tune and full of static electricity. Suddenly the ocean looked more vast than ever and not necessarily friendly. Turning sharply, she headed back toward the shore. Idiot, she thought as she neared the white sand of the beach again and the frightened feeling slipped away. You read "The Secret Circle: The Initiation Chapter Two" in category "Essay examples" What were you afraid of? That the sky and the sea were really listening to you? That those words were actually going to do something? She could almost laugh at it now, and she was embarrassed and annoyed with herself. Talk about an overactive imagination. She was still safe, and the world was still ordinary. Words were only words. But when a movement caught her eye then, she would always remember that deep down she had not been surprised. Something was happening. There was motion on the shore. It was the red-haired guy. He’d burst out between the pitch pines and was running down the slope of a dune. Suddenly inexplicably calm, Cassie hurried the rest of the way down the dock, to meet him as he reached the sand. The dog beside him was loping easily, looking up at the guy’s face as if to say this was a great game, and what next? But from the boy’s expression and the way he was running, Cassie could tell it wasn’t a game. He looked up and down the deserted beach. A hundred yards to the left a headland jutted out, so you couldn’t see what was beyond. He glanced at Cassie and their eyes met. Then, turning abruptly, he started toward the headland. Cassie’s heart was beating hard. â€Å"Wait!† she called urgently. He turned back, scanning her quickly with his blue-gray eyes. â€Å"Who’s after you?† she said, though she thought she knew. His voice was crisp, his words concise. â€Å"Two guys who look like linebackers for the New York Giants.† Cassie nodded, feeling the thump of her heart accelerate. But her voice was still calm. â€Å"Their names are Jordan and Logan Bainbridge.† â€Å"It figures.† â€Å"You’ve heard of them?† â€Å"No. But it figures they’d be named something like that.† Cassie almost laughed. She liked the way he looked, so windblown and alert, scarcely out of breath even though he’d been running hard. And she liked the daredevil sparkle in his eyes and the way he joked even though he was in trouble. â€Å"Raj and I could take them, but they’ve got a couple of friends with them,† he said, turning again. Walking backward, he added, â€Å"You’d better go the other way – you don’t want to run into them. And it would be nice if you could pretend you hadn’t seen me.† â€Å"Wait!† cried Cassie. Whatever was going on wasn’t her business†¦ but she found herself speaking without hesitation. There was something about this guy; something that made her want to help him. â€Å"That way’s a dead end – around the headland you’ll run into rocks. You’ll be trapped.† â€Å"But the other way’s too straight. I’d still be in sight when they got here. They weren’t far behind me.† Cassie’s thoughts were flying, and then suddenly she knew. â€Å"Hide in the boat.† â€Å"What?† â€Å"In the boat. In the powerboat. On the dock.† She gestured at it. â€Å"You can get in the cabin and they won’t see you.† His eyes followed hers, but he shook his head. â€Å"I’d really be trapped if they found me there. And Raj doesn’t like to swim.† â€Å"They won’t find you,† Cassie said. â€Å"They won’t go near it. I’ll tell them you went down the beach that way.† He stared at her, the smile dying out of his eyes. â€Å"You don’t understand,† he said quietly. â€Å"Those guys are trouble.† â€Å"I don’t care,† Cassie said, and she almost pushed him toward the dock. Hurry, hurry, hurry, something in her brain was urging. Her shyness had vanished. All that mattered was that he got out of sight. â€Å"What are they going to do to me, beat me up? I’m an innocent bystander,† she said. â€Å"But – â€Å" â€Å"Oh, please. Don’t argue. Just do it!† He stared at her one last instant, then turned, slapping his thigh for the dog. â€Å"C’mon, boy!† He ran down the dock and jumped easily into the powerboat, disappearing as he ducked into the cabin. The dog followed him in one powerful spring and barked. Sh! thought Cassie. The two in the boat were hidden now, but if anyone went up the dock, they would be plainly visible. She hooked the loop of frayed rope over the top of the last pier, screening off the dock. Then she cast a frantic glance around and headed for the water, splashing in. Bending down, she dug up a handful of wet sand and shells. She let the water wash the sand out of the loose cage of her fingers and held on to the two or three small shells that remained. She reached for another handful. She heard shouting from the dunes. I’m gathering shells, I’m only gathering shells, she thought. I don’t need to look up yet. I’m not concerned. â€Å"Hey!† Cassie looked up. There were four of them, and the two in front were Portia’s brothers. Jordan was the one on the debate team and Logan was the one in the Pistol Club. Or was it the other way around? â€Å"Hey, did you see a guy come running this way?† Jordan asked. They were looking in all directions, excited like dogs on a scent, and suddenly another line of poetry came to Cassie. Four lean hounds crouched low and smiling. Except that these guys weren’t lean; they were brawny and sweaty. And out of breath, Cassie noticed, vaguely contemptuous. â€Å"It’s Portia’s friend – Cathy,† said Logan. â€Å"Hey, Cathy, did a guy just go running down here?† Cassie walked toward him slowly, her fists full of shells. Her heart was knocking against her ribs so hard she was sure they could see it, and her tongue was frozen. â€Å"Can’t you talk? What’re you doing here?† Mutely, Cassie held out her hands, opening them. They exchanged glances and snorts, and Cassie realized how she must look to these college-age guys – a slight girl with unremarkable brown hair and ordinary blue eyes. Just a little high-school ditz from California whose idea of a good time was picking up worthless shells. â€Å"Did you see somebody go past here?† Jordan said, impatient but slow, as if she might be hard of hearing. Dry-mouthed, Cassie nodded, and looked down the beach toward the headland. Jordan was wearing an open windbreaker over his T-shirt, which seemed odd in such warm weather. What was even odder was the bulge beneath it, but when he turned, Cassie saw the glint of metal. A gun! Jordan must be the one in the Pistol Club, she thought irrelevantly. Now that she saw something really to be scared about, she found her voice again and said huskily, â€Å"A guy and a dog went that way a few minutes ago.† â€Å"We’ve got him! He’ll be stuck on the rocks!† Logan said. He and the two guys Cassie didn’t know started down the beach, but Jordan turned back to Cassie. â€Å"Are you sure?† Startled, she looked up at him. Why was he asking? She deliberately widened her eyes and tried to look as childish and stupid as possible. â€Å"Yes†¦Ã¢â‚¬ â€Å"Because it’s important.† And suddenly he was holding her wrist. Cassie looked down at it in amazement, her shells scattering, too surprised at being grabbed to say anything. â€Å"It’s very important,† Jordan said, and she could feel the tension running through his body, could smell the acridity of his sweat. A wave of revulsion swept through her, and she struggled to keep her face blank and wide-eyed. She was afraid he was going to pull her up against him, but he just twisted her wrist. She didn’t mean to cry out, but she couldn’t help it. It was partly pain and partly a reaction to something she saw in his eyes, something fanatical and ugly and hot like fire. She found herself gasping, more afraid than she could remember being since she was a child. â€Å"Yes, I’m sure,† she said, breathless, staring into that ugliness without letting herself look away. â€Å"He went down there and around the headland.† â€Å"Come on, Jordan, leave her alone!† Logan shouted. â€Å"She’s just a kid. Let’s go!† Jordan hesitated. He knows I’m lying, Cassie thought, with a curious fascination. He knows, but he’s afraid to trust what he knows because he doesn’t know how he knows it. Believe me, she thought, gazing straight back at him, willing him to do it. Believe me and go away. Believe me. Believe me. He let go of her wrist. â€Å"Sorry,† he muttered ungraciously, and he turned and loped off with the others. â€Å"Sure,† Cassie whispered, standing very still. Tingling, she watched them jog across the wet sand, elbows and knees pumping, Jordan’s wind-breaker flapping loose behind him. The weakness spread from her stomach to her legs, and her knees suddenly felt like Silly Putty. She was aware, all at once, of the sound of the ocean again. A comforting sound that seemed to enfold her. When the four running figures turned the corner and disappeared from her sight, she turned back to the dock, meaning to tell the red-haired guy that he could come out now. He already had. Slowly, she made her jellied legs carry her to the dock. He was just standing there, and the look on his face made her feel strange. â€Å"You’d better get out of here – or maybe hide again,† she said hesitantly. â€Å"They might come right back†¦Ã¢â‚¬ â€Å"I don’t think so.† â€Å"Well†¦Ã¢â‚¬ Cassie faltered, looking at him, feeling almost frightened. â€Å"Your dog was very good,† she offered uncertainly, at last. â€Å"I mean, not barking or anything.† â€Å"He knows better.† â€Å"Oh.† Cassie looked down the beach, trying to think of something else to say. His voice was gentle, not harsh, but that keen look never left his eyes and his mouth was grim. â€Å"I guess they really are gone now,† she said. â€Å"Thanks to you,† he said. He turned to her, and their eyes met. â€Å"I don’t know how to thank you,† he added, â€Å"for putting up with that for me. You don’t even know me.† Cassie felt even more queer. Looking up at him made her almost dizzy, but she couldn’t take her eyes from his. There was no sparkle now; they looked like blue-gray steel. Compelling – hypnotic. Drawing her closer, drawing her in. But I do know you, she thought. In that instant a strange image flashed through her mind. It was as if she were floating outside herself and she could see the two of them, standing there on the beach. She could see the sun shining on his hair and her face tilted up to him. And they were connected by a silver cord that hummed and sang with power. A band of energy, linking them. It was so real she could almost reach out and touch it. It bound them heart to heart, and it was trying to draw them closer. A thought came to her, as if some small voice from deep inside her was speaking. The silver cord can never be broken. Your lives are linked. You can’t escape each other any more than you can escape destiny. Suddenly, as quickly as it had come, the picture and the voice vanished. Cassie blinked and shook her head, trying to wrench her mind back. He was still looking at her, waiting for an answer to his question. â€Å"I was glad to help you,† she said, feeling how lame and inadequate the words were. â€Å"And I didn’t mind – what happened.† His eyes dropped to her wrist, and there was a flash from them almost like silver. â€Å"I did,† he said. â€Å"I should have come out earlier.† Cassie shook her head again. The last thing she’d wanted was for him to be caught and hurt. â€Å"I just wanted to help you,† she repeated softly, confused. Then she said, â€Å"Why were they chasing you?† He looked away, drawing in a deep breath. Cassie had the sense of trespassing. â€Å"That’s all right. I shouldn’t have asked – † she began. â€Å"No.† He looked back at her and smiled, his wry one-sided smile. â€Å"If anybody has a right to ask, you do. But it’s a little difficult to explain. I’m†¦ off my turf here. Back home, they wouldn’t dare come after me. They wouldn’t dare look at me cross-eyed. But here I’m fair game.† She still didn’t understand. â€Å"They don’t like people who are – different,† he said, his voice quiet again. â€Å"And I’m different from them. I’m very, very different.† Yes, she thought. Whatever he was, he wasn’t like Jordan or Logan. He wasn’t like anyone she had ever met. â€Å"I’m sorry. That’s not much of an explanation, I know,† he said. â€Å"Especially after what you did. You helped me, and I won’t forget about it.† He glanced down at himself and laughed shortly. â€Å"Of course, it doesn’t look like there’s much I can do for you, does it? Not here. Although†¦Ã¢â‚¬ He paused. â€Å"Wait a minute.† He reached in his pocket, fingers groping for something. All in an instant Cassie’s dizziness overwhelmed her, blood rushing to her face. Was he looking for money? Did he think he could pay her for helping him? She was humiliated, and more stricken than when Jordan had grabbed her wrist, and she couldn’t help the tears flooding her eyes. But what he pulled out of his pocket was a stone, a rock like something you might pick up on the ocean floor. At least that was what it looked like at first. One side was rough and gray, embedded with tiny black spirals like little shells. But then he turned it over, and the other side was gray swirled with pale blue, crystallized, sparkling in the sunlight as if it were overlaid with rock candy. It was beautiful. He pressed it into her palm, closing her fingers around it. As it touched her she felt a jolt like electricity that ran through her hand and up her arm. The stone felt alive in some way she couldn’t explain. Through the pounding in her ears she heard him speaking, quickly and in a low voice. â€Å"This is chalcedony. It’s a – good-luck piece. If you’re ever in trouble or danger or anything like that, if there’s ever a time when you feel all alone and no one else can help you, hold on to it tight – tight† – his fingers squeezed hers – â€Å"and think of me.† She stared up at him, mesmerized. She was hardly breathing, and her chest felt too full. He was so close to her; she could see his eyes, the same color as the crystal, and she could feel his breath on her skin and the warmth of his body reflecting the sun’s heat. His hair wasn’t just red, but all sorts of colors, some strands so dark they were almost purple, others like burgundy wine, others gold. Different, she thought again; he was different from any guy she’d ever known. A sweet hot current was running through her, a feeling of wildness and possibility. She was trembling and she could feel a heartbeat in her fingers, but she couldn’t tell if it was hers or his. He had seemed to hear her thoughts before; now she felt almost as if he were in her mind. He was so close and he was looking down at her†¦ â€Å"And what happens then?† she whispered. â€Å"And then – maybe your luck will change.† Abruptly he stepped back, as if he’d just remembered something, and his tone altered. The moment was over. â€Å"It’s worth a try, don’t you think?† he said lightly. Unable to speak, she nodded. He was teasing now. But he hadn’t been before. â€Å"I’ve got to go. I shouldn’t have stayed this long,† he said. Cassie swallowed. â€Å"You’d better be careful. I think Jordan had a gun – â€Å" â€Å"Wouldn’t surprise me.† He brushed it off, stopping her from saying anything further. â€Å"Don’t worry; I’m leaving the Cape. For now, anyway. I’ll be back; maybe I’ll see you then.† He started to turn. Then he paused one last moment and took her hand again. Cassie was too startled at the feeling of his skin against hers to do anything about it. He turned her hand over and looked at the red marks on her wrist, then brushed them lightly with his fingertips. The steely light was back in his eyes when he looked up. â€Å"And believe me,† he whispered, â€Å"he’ll pay for this someday. I guarantee it.† And then he did something that shocked Cassie more than anything else had during that whole shocking day. He lifted her wounded hand to his lips and kissed it. It was the gentlest, the lightest of touches, and it went through Cassie like fire. She stared at him, dazed and unbelieving, utterly speechless. She could neither move nor think; she could only stand there and feel. And then he was leaving, whistling for the dog, which romped around Cassie in circles before finally breaking away. She was alone, gazing after him, her fingers clenched tightly on the small rough stone in her palm. It was only then she realized she’d never asked him his name. John Steinbecks The Grapes of Wrath. It also examines defiance found in the film Cool Hand Luke and the Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger. Without Hope, All is LostPiercings and tattoos, riots and broken bottles, vandalism and crime; these are all aspects that come to mind when a person hears the word defiance. Defiance is often perceived to be negative, unnecessary, and destructive, while in reality can be a vital part of life. There are numerous aspects to defiance, many of which are positive and necessary to ensure survival. However, it is necessary to have the essence of hope in order for defiance to reveal its true success. Many books and movies portray defiance and the element of hope, along with the success the combination can bring. The Grapes of Wrath, written by John Steinbeck, illustrates the essential need for hope with the element of defiance. Hope is what creates the positive aspect of defiance; without it, ultimate defiance and sacrifice leads only to insanity. The Grapes of Wrath tells the story of the Joad Family's journey from Oklahoma to California.Ma and Tom Joad. Note Tom's scar on his left cheek...T he Joads, as well as Casy, the preacher who accompanies them, are the true example that hope, faith, and sacrifice leads to pure and positive defiance. Each member of the family was defiant in some aspect throughout the novel, and the defiance always combines the necessary element of hope. Casy was clearly the most obvious defiant character. He had been a preacher, but left the church and its ideals. He began founding his own beliefs, regardless of the opinions of society. Even though Casy lost faith in the traditional religious beliefs, he did not lose faith in himself. Casy was rebellious and defiant against set beliefs and being thrust into a position by society. When the Joads finally arrived in California, Casy did not accept the ridiculous wagers the workers were getting. Soon, instead of just joining strikes, Casy became a leader.

Population vs Populace

Population vs Populace Population vs Populace Population vs Populace By Maeve Maddox Lately I have begun to notice speakers and writers using the word populace where I would expect to see the word population. For example: With a young and skilled workforce – 65% of Turkey’s 74 million populace is under the age of 34 – producing 500,000 graduates a year, Turkey is now classified as a fast developing economy. Meanwhile, 3.7 percent of the 2012 populace – or roughly 23,436 people – held doctorates. Both words, population and populace, derive ultimately from a Latin word for people, but the words entered English with distinctive meanings. From the beginning, population referred to the collective inhabitants of a place, whereas populace had the meaning â€Å"ordinary people† as opposed to the titled, wealthy, or privileged classes. In Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Little Princess (1905), the protagonist has been taught by her middleclass father to be kind to â€Å"the populace.† Thrust suddenly from a comfortable life into poverty, Sara learns what it is to be hungry. On the way to buy some buns, she notices a ragged little girl with â€Å"hungry eyes†: Sara knew they were hungry eyes the moment she saw them, and she felt a sudden sympathy. â€Å"This,† she said to herself, with a little sigh, â€Å"is one of the populace- and she is hungrier than I am.† Not only did the word populace refer to the less privileged part of the population, it was also used as a pejorative term for â€Å"the mob, the rabble, the unthinking masses.† Populace is increasingly used as a mere synonym for population, but its other connotations linger: The upper-middle class wants to lead an aroused populace against the true enemy, but the populace isn’t listening.- The American Interest, Vol. 6, No. 3, January 11, 2011. Population  is neutral, while  populace  often carries a superior tone toward the group it refers to.- The Grammarist The connotation of ignorance, fickleness, and tractability is present in the following quotations: A Scare A Week Keeps the Populace Meek The direction of the government is driven by raw emotion; it can change from one day to the next, depending on how effectively demagogues are able to harness and control the populace. An uninformed populace will fall for anything. The term argumentum ad populum, â€Å"appeal to the populace† is applied to the logical fallacy also known as â€Å"appeal to the masses† and â€Å"the bandwagon fallacy.† The verb sway is frequently found in tandem with populace: Choice of political candidates solely by popular referendum is one of the greatest dangers to a democracy as it opens the way for demagogues and liars to sway the populace with empty rhetoric and promises. In elections, the candidates make daily public appearances to sway the general populace. sway transitive verb: To cause to move backward and forward or from side to side. Populace may be taking on a new meaning when used with a modifier: â€Å"a portion of the general population perceived as having shared interests or characteristics.† Here are some examples in which populace is used to denote a segment of a larger population: Hernandez wants to assist Birmingham’s Hispanic populace. North Carolinas immigrant populace emphasizes the financial power of non-native residents via their vital contributions to the states economy. In our community, there are perspectives that continue to compromise and even endanger the lives of our most physically and/or cognitively disabled populace. Population remains the less ambiguous choice when referring to all the inhabitants of a place and not to a specified portion of them. Note: The adjective populous (â€Å"densely populated†) is often used erroneously for the noun populace: INCORRECT: The immigrant populous of the colonial era prompted, at least in part, Jean de Crevecoeurs concept of a new man that differed from European stock in both style and substance.- Egg Harbor Regional High School District, Atlantic County, New Jersey. CORRECT :   The immigrant populace of the colonial era prompted, at least in part, Jean de Crevecoeurs concept of a new man that differed from European stock in both style and substance. Gay Marriages Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Gay Marriages - Essay Example As the report declares in Oklahoma, we're introduced to a rancher named Sam. When Earl, his spouse of 25 years, died, he left the farm to Sam. But a few of Earl's cousins, who were of the mind that the land belongs to them, sued for it and won, which now means Sam, who has nary a cent to his name, has to find someplace else to go. His children, from a previous, heterosexual marriage, try to sell a few of Sam's horses, but the asking price is insultingly low. This essay stresses that De Seve uses shots of rallies and protests, fragments from interviews with gay public figures. The history of marriage from medieval times to now is explained, it is said that the concept of mar-rying for love, not the business of survival, is a relatively modern act and that marriage is an ever-evolving institution. De Seve invokes the case of Richard Loving and Mildred Jeter, a white man and black woman whose marriage led to the 1967 Supreme Court decision ending legal restrictions on marriages based on race. The film makes us understand, that it is very important to be tolerant towards those who are not like you, and even if you are a heterosexual, you should understand homosexuals and their desire to have a family. Matters of civil justice often can be quite serious, as it is shown in â€Å"Tying the Knot†. But there can even be life-threatening consequences: in most states, gays cannot make medical decisions for their partners in an emergency.

Amazon's not so secret war on taxes Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Amazon's not so secret war on taxes - Essay Example Amazon gains an advantage in the market but is that superior position justified on the basis of the fact that Amazon has the best strategy for dodging taxes as it is an online store while other big stores such as Barnes & Noble and Wal-Mart are traditional stores. Many of the businesspersons argue that a company’s superiority or success in the market can be recognized by the type and quality of products and services that they offer instead of their tax schemes. Amazon played a major role in preventing the law to be changed and used its power to argue to claims about taxes on internet purchases. The sales tax is an important consideration as there is a lot on question. The sales tax allows the state governments to collect a fair amount for infrastructure facilities, parks, schools, and streets, the big stores have their retail primacy at stake, and customers have their money and way of shopping at stake. But on the other hand, Amazon is most widely known for being customer frie ndly, affordable, crackling, and a reputed online store. Behind this is the truth of the struggling battler that stands firmly on its principle. However, the strong power and aggression of the other retail stores broke the tax avoidance scheme of Amazon and led the states to pass the Marketplace Fairness Act. Thus, with this act, all the efforts of Amazon to prevent the laws from changing ended in ultimate failure. Eventually, Amazon supported it too as it has physical existence in many of the states with their warehouses and had professionals working.

Eric Eazy-E Wright A Life Interrupted by Taylor Evans :: essays research papers

Eric Eazy-E Wright A Life Interrupted by Taylor Evans Born September 7, 1963, Eric "Eazy-E" Wright's early reputation on the streets of Compton, California, was a hustler eager to apply his street knowledge to his legitimate game. He dropped out of high school in the tenth grade, but refused that to interrupt his success. In the late `80's he turned to rap music. Along with Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, DJ Yella, and M.C. Ren established the most successful and controversial rap group in history. As N.W.A, they blasted police cruelty and challenged the establishment. They eventually took their message of inner-city struggle to millions of fans worldwide. As a soloist, Eazy's career was even more incredible. He launched Compton/Ruthless Records in 1987 and by 1988 had two hit acts-JJ. Fad and Michel'le. During the summer of the same year, N.W.A's Straight Outta Compton LP frightened the media into labeling the group "gangsters". This was a label the group wore and exploited with such force that by the time Eazy released his solo project Eazy-Duz-It that fall, the stage of musical funk and lyrical fight had long been set. "Boyz-N-The-Hood" , "We Want Eazy", "Eazy-Duz-It". His voice fueled a legion of hits. In the early `90's, he joined other West Coast rappers, including M.C. Hammer, Ice T, Tone-Loc, and Young MC, in a stop the violence campaign led by the single "We're All In The Same Gang". With N.W.A, Eazy broke down all the doors of mass exposure previously closed to rap music. Attempts to rock the young musician's foundation were generally useless. Arrests for performing N.W.A's biggest hit "F*** The Police", and other attempts at censorship only helped pave the way for his success. By the time the group had released its last album, Efil4zaggin, in 1991, they had sold more than six million records. As a businessman, Eazy had built a solid commodity with his Ruthless Records label. Some of his more famous signings were: Above The Law, Bone- Thugs-N-Harmo ny, and D.O.C. His ability to promote and market these acts was on the strength of his radio show, "Ruthless Radio Show". As an on-air personality, Eazy gave his audience tickets to his performances, talked to fans, and also became more famous with the young black Americans. Few really knew the man behind the scenes. His charitable nature benefited such organizations as Athletes and Entertainers For Kids, United Colors, and the Make A Wish Foundation.

Macroeconomics Paper

With the decline on the disposable income of every household in the economy, domestic consumption started to deteriorate creating a negative impact on various industries including the housing industry. It was identified based form the data collected by the Bureau of Labor and Statistics that the compound annual rate of the housing industry’s CPI for February 2008 was equal to 2.8 percent, with November 2007 exhibited the highest changes from its preceding month equal to 0.4 percent, as compared to the 4.2 percent of February 2007. This only means that the rate of increase in the prices of housing units starts to slow down but still remains high considering the disposable income every household currently have. Furthermore, employment rate plunges down along side with the housing market as August 2007 recorded the highest lay-off on the history of housing market equivalent to 21,000 as compared to only 1,000 lay-offs happened last August 2006. With this large number of workers laid-off from their jobs, plus the increasing number of bankrupt housing companies, employment rate started to decline. Though the GDP of United States remains high despite of the turmoil in the housing market, but its GDP growth rate significantly decline from 2006 to 2007 from 2.6 percent to 1.5 percent respectively. This only means that housing market still imposes barrier towards the economic growth of United States. Housing starts was down by 28.4 percent from 2006 to 2007 as consumers cuts their demand on housing units due to limited budget and high cost. In order to prevent the said depression of the housing market, federal government continued slashing down their interest rate to guide housing companies to recover financially since housing sales has been declining since 2006. Last January 2008, the Federal Reserve cut the interest rate to 3.5 percent in order to stabilize the economy and prevent the impeding economic recession (Presse, 2008). Furthermore, it was also identified that new home sales declined by around 46 and 30 percent on 2006 and 2007 respectively. The said record was the lowest annual home sales since 1995. The above identified economic factors help most of the economists and market analysts in determining the future performance of the housing market as well as of other industries in the economy. In this regard, the aim of this paper is to identify various macroeconomic factors that affect the performance of the housing market and how it affects the behavior of the entire housing market. Furthermore, discussions on the future condition of housing market will be presented in order to easily understand how economists and market analysts projects the performance of housing market. Expect also at the end of this paper alternatives that would address macroeconomic factors that negatively affects the stability of the housing market and its evaluation that will serve as the guide in choosing the appropriate solution for the instability of the housing market. Conclusion Based from the given data, arguments and examples above, it is therefore clear that housing market is indeed performing inefficiently due to various macroeconomic factors. Depletion of consumer’s disposable income made significant negative effects to various macroeconomic factors that later on serves as the source of instability of many industries in the economy including the housing market. Furthermore, the projections of most economists and market analysts regarding the future condition of the housing market greatly affects how financial institutions establishes their lending transactions with the housing companies which adds up to the financial problems of the latter. With the aid of fiscal and monetary policies of the federal government, the issues concerning the instability of the housing market are solved. References Presse, A. F. (2008). Wuthering Heights By Charlotte Bronte - 1137 Words

The Bronte Sisters, undisputable female voices in the Victorian period, built unbreakable embankments against the patriarchal flow, paved the way for the free flow of matriarchy and establishes gender equality and above all sets stage for humanity through their works. Emily Bronte wrote Wuthering Heights, Charlotte Bronte wrote Jane Eyre and Anne Bronte wrote Agnes Grey. They wrote these novels based on their own experiences and close observation of life and conditions of women in male dominated society. Their works of fiction depict the saga of women’s struggle (for identity, equality and existence) of nineteenth century England and contain elements of feminism. To raise female voices( subaltern voices), against the male dominated society was unthinkable(taboo) during that period. Freedom, equality, emancipation were foreign to the women of Victorian England. Against this gender discrimination the Bronte Sisters challenged the male authority through their female protagonists, the role model for women’s emancipation and gender equality, Catherine, Jane Eyre and Agnes Grey. Freedom does not come easily. Women cannot wait for social revolution to alter the patriarchal social pattern in a day; rather every individual will have to participate in unmasking male domination by asserting herself.
